Little Peruna - On Halloween night 1934 Little Peruna, the spunky Shetland pony mascot for the Southern Methodist University football team either escaped from his pen or escaped from a failed kidnapping by a rival football team. Once free, Peruna galloped across campus to the intersection of Mockingbird Lane and Airline Drive where he was killed by a hit and run driver. It was a tragedy the whole campus mourned over. Or was it karma? Earlier that month during a football game in New York state, Little Peruna kicked the Fordham Ram in the head and killed it….

In the 1930s, Peruna was a very popular medicine for the relief of throat and sinus congestion. It’s well known slogan “Full of kick” might be a reference to the medicine’s 28% alcohol content.
