Spring at Bird’s Fort Revisited - A pile of old, rusting paint cans sits on top of a once clear running spring. Here in the winter of 1842 three of the residence of Bird’s Fort: Mr. Cartwright, William Bird, and his daughter (her name is not noted) walked to the spring to fetch water. They were killed by scouts from the neighboring tribe. I used a copy of a hand drawn map from 1904 to locate the spring. This map also shows a graveyard was located about 300 yards northeast from the fort.

When I originally drew this site five years ago, the surrounding fields were being plotted for new home construction. The roads at that time were still pretty rugged, mostly gravel. Going back to redraw the spring this year all the new homes were completed and occupied. The new improved Meadow Hawk Drive now covers what might have been the Bird’s Fort gravesite.
