Herbert Gets The Mail - The newspapers began calling Herbert Noble “The Cat” after he survived four attempts on his life. He relocated to the Diamond M Ranch in Flower Mound after his wife was killed in a car explosion. With several more failed drive by shootings and a bomb found in his private airplane, it’s understandable that Herbert was getting paranoid and stressed out. But as he told one newspaper reporter “Each failed attempt generates a lot of fan mail. I love driving down to the mailbox and getting all those letters.”

On the night of August 6,1951, a group of men dug a hole in Herbert’s dirt driveway. They filled it with nitroglycerine and blasting caps then covered it back over. A copper wire led from the buried bomb to a small clump of bushes 75 yards away. The next morning when Herbert pulled up to collect his fan mail the men hiding in the bushes touched the coper wire to a battery setting off an explosion that flipped the car over, and scattered pieces of the car and Herbert over a circumference of 75 feet.

Afterwards, the hitmen scattered a deck of playing cards across the smoldering remains as their signature to claim the $30,000 contract on Herbert's head.
