American Wing – Iceberg and Mercury

Iceberg by Frederic Edwin Church 1861 was sold in London and hung on the grand stairway of the Rosehill country estate. Eventually the estate was turned into the Manchester Juvenile Dentition Center for Boys. In 1976 the center sent the painting away for auction. During cleaning it was discovered the signature was in crayon and that Church’s signature was behind the frame.
